Reflections For Life
RUN THE RACE
THE HEBREWS SERIES: Hebrews 1: 1 - 4
Pastor Joe Son
March 29, 2020
The central theme of the book of Hebrews is the supremacy of Jesus over all things. And we see this from the very beginning of the book. The book was written for the Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and mistreatment because of their faith in Jesus Christ. Because of these difficulties, they were going back to old patterns of life; turning to Jewish regulations and rituals to secure their salvation. And the author wrote this letter to warn the readers not to leave this great salvation they have received through Christ Jesus, and to encourage them to keep on running the race that is set before them. In order to do this, the author calls his readers to look to Jesus, to see and understand who He is. The unique nature of Jesus as God’s Son, means that His words hold authority and power in a way that was not present in the Old Testament. And the main message of Jesus’ words and teachings was simply put – believe in God, and believe also in me. And LIVE!
"For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
There is no need to heed other voices and teachings, no need to turn back to sacrifices and rules, because Jesus Christ has accomplished all that is needed for the purification of our sins. He is all that we need for eternal life!
This message is so relevant to us Christians living in these days as well. There are so many voices constantly telling us that Jesus is not enough. Especially when hardships and sufferings come our way, there is that temptation to turn to other things, and worldly solutions instead of turning to Jesus. At times rather than completely replacing Jesus in our lives, we are tempted and convinced to water-down our belief in Jesus by adding other things alongside Christ - believe in Christ but also rely on money and worldly connections, believe in Christ but also seek to build your own kingdom here, believe in Christ but also live for your own happiness and success, believe in Christ but also do more at church to show that you are a true believer… etc.
Brothers and sisters, we are living in the last days. Turn on the news and this is becoming more and more clear. At God’s perfect time Jesus Christ will come again to bring judgement before restoring everything once and for all. And on that last day, when we stand before the Judge, and God were to ask you “Why should I let you enter into my Kingdom?” What would you answer be? I pray that you fully understand the truth that only Jesus Christ is enough.
And as we walk through this series, may we lay aside all our worldly desires, our pleasure of the flesh, all temptations and all our sins, and fix our eyes on Jesus. Let us run the race that is set before us, and as a community, let us run this race together!
Questions for Reflection:
1. What are things that you are holding on to other than Jesus?
2. What is stopping you from fully believing and relying on Jesus Christ?
3. What other voices are driving your life?
4. What other names are worthy compared to our LORD JESUS Christ?
We pray that this exercise will strengthen your relationship with the Lord as you draw near with confidence.
